August 2023

August has been a very, very busy month for us over at Studio [notes.]

With the big update for Lost Report nearing completion, we’re currently in what is probably the most critical stage, making sure shit actually works.
I don’t wanna give any specific release date yet to avoid disappointing people if things don’t go as planned, but it shouldn’t take too long now.

Oh yeah, the update also has a name now. We’re calling it the Definitive Edition update.
It’s not the most creative name, but I wanted something that would immediately tell players that what they’re about to play is the absolute best version of the game, and I think it’s pretty effective for that purpose.

So now, I’d like to talk a bit about the update itself, and why I decided to make something this big.

After the release of Lost Report, despite the immensely positive reception, I still wasn’t entirely happy with the game.
Playing through the game, I felt like it was overly negative and mean-spirited, which wasn’t exactly what I wanted.

After all, I want the people who my play my games to feel happy after playing them, not depressed or feeling like they’ve been made fun of.
If you felt that way after playing Lost Report, I’m truly sorry for that.

I feel like for the original version of Lost Report, I thought way too much about things I dislike.
For this update, I wanted to make a game about the things I love instead.

So what’s actually in the update?
I haven’t really shown or talked about it much, apart from screenshots and random bits of information on Twitter.

The largest part of the update consists of the new story route you can play after finishing the game for the first time.
Over time, Tony and Sergio really grew beyond how they were originally written. I started noticing little things while playing thinking “Oh, so he’s that kind of person.”
It’s weird, but I felt like the ending they got in the original release wasn’t exactly what they deserved.

I wanted to give them a second chance. In the new route, Tony wakes up on the first day of the game again, with his memories of what happened in the original route.
Maybe, if things go differently, even Tony and Sergio can get a happy ending.
You’ll see when you play it.

But that’s not all, of course.
The Definitive Edition update contains numerous bugfixes and graphical improvements, new NPCs to talk to, and new areas to explore. It kinda grew to the point where I feel like it may be bigger than all of the original release now.

There’s also a couple new sidequests, but I won’t spoil those for you here. I feel like there’s some really interesting stuff in those sidequests that’s totally different from the rest of the game, so I’m excited to hear how you feel about them when you get to play them.

Oh yeah, there’s also a day/night cycle, but I’m not gonna tell you how it works. You’ll find out.

Overall, development is going great, and we’re almost ready to release the update.
I know it has been taking a while, but I promise it’ll be worth the wait!

Finally, there’s one more thing I’d like to share.
Kowloon’s Curse: Lost Report Definitive Edition is getting a limited physical release to celebrate the upcoming update, available now on Indiegogo!
It’ll come with a cool manual and postcard too, so make sure to get one if you’re into collecting physical games!
It’s available here.

That’s all for now, thanks for reading!
